A look ahead

The year 2007 should bring many changes for Griffith Fire Department. First and foremost is the talk of a multi-department merger including Griffith Fire Dept., Midway Fire and Rescue, and Gumtree Fire and Rescue. Members of all departments met in December of 2006 to discuss the possibility. As with any change in business there was both positive and negative feedback. The merger process will take a lot of time an effort but should be a helpful step in protecting the assets and continuity of service from all the departments. The city of Winston Salem is fast approaching northern Davidson County and has already claimed a large portion of Fire District form Griffith and Gumtree and will be attempting to annex a portion of Midway's district in the next 3-5 years.

On Monday Feb. 5, 2007 all departments will again come together to discuss details of the merger and arrange a possible operational merge to include training and familiarization with all dept staff and equipment. This will help streamline the final process of a complete merger.

2007 also holds many other opportunities within our department. This year we will continue to train personnel to the highest standards. We hope that we can get more use from recent training aids purchased and built at the station. This includes the roof ventilation prop built in the summer of 2006. We should also have input about training from several other members.

And as with any other year we will gain new members and unfortunately lose several members. As always our department we will strive to keep a staff of highly trained and devoted personnel.

2006 Annexation Information

After a three year battle the North Carolina Supreme Court announced  that it will not hear a challenge brought by opponents to Winston-Salem’s 2003 annexation. The ruling means the annexation of nearly 20 square miles and more than 17,000 residents will go into effect on September 30.

Fire at Pallet Resource of NC

At approximatly 7:30 Sunday morning, August 13. Griffith Fire Department was dispatched to assist A-RC-H Fire Department with a building fire at the Pallet Resource of NC plant on NC Hwy. 150 in Reedy Creek. Units arrived to find a working building fire. The plant produces pallets, skids and other wood products. The building involved was used to store a large amount of wood. This created a very heavy fire load. Before the incident was over 10 fire departments were on scene to assist. Only the one building was damaged and employees were back to work as normal Monday morning. The incident is still under investigation by the Davidson County Fire Marshall's Office. See our Picture section for a few pictures from the incident.
